Chance Cube Studio

Chance Cube Studios is a purpose-built residential recording facility created for owner Robert Johnson near Louisville, Kentucky. Planned from the home’s original construction, the basement began with 16-foot ceilings, centralized utilities, and a wide-open floor plan that gave Haverstick Designs the flexibility to develop a spacious full-band live room, an accurate control room, a dry vocal/isolation booth, storage, and a guest lounge with a kitchenette. The studio uses room-within-a-room construction, Kinetics Noise Control spring hangers, isolated electrical circuits, and double-laminated doors and windows from Soundproof Windows to control transmission both into and out of the facility. Thick absorbers, tuned and reflective treatment elements, corner bass traps, stretch-fabric systems, ceiling diffusion, and adjustable Acoustical Fulfillment Flex-48 treatments create a natural control room and a versatile live room that can be tuned for drums, piano, vocals, guitar cabinets, and full-band sessions.


Haverstick Designs provided facility planning, acoustical and isolation design, field measurements, testing, construction documents, and photorealistic renderings. Wes Sipes and Sipes Custom Carpentry completed the specialized isolation and interior construction, translating the decoupled walls, spring-supported ceilings, sound mats, wall ties, and other technical details into the finished rooms. Simplified Acoustics installed the stretch-fabric systems and interior acoustic treatments, while Vintage King—represented by Chris Karn—served as the recording-equipment dealer and advisor and helped connect the project team. The finished studio pairs commercial-level recording performance with a relaxed residential setting, giving artists access to professional rooms, extensive recording equipment, and a collection of high-quality instruments in a comfortable, destination-style environment.
