Stephen Simms Home Theater

Designed for longtime media collector Stephen Simms, this dedicated home theater transforms an enclosed, light-controlled room into an immersive 11.4.6 Dolby Atmos environment. Haverstick Designs developed the layout, 3D renderings, speaker geometry, projector sightlines, and acoustical treatment around stepped, raked seating so every row receives consistent coverage. Wisdom Audio line-source speakers serve the bed and height channels, with the overhead speakers integrated into custom ceiling clouds, while four JTR RS2 subwoofers—eight 18-inch drivers in total—provide powerful, distributed low-frequency energy and help control room modes. A retractable, woven Seymour acoustically transparent screen conceals the front LCR array and pairs with a JVC NZ9 laser projector. Perforated panels, broadband absorption, vertical corner traps, upper-level bass trapping, and other treatments are largely concealed behind removable stretch fabric, preserving the theater’s clean architectural finish.


Haverstick Designs completed the acoustic modeling and on-site testing, translating frequency- and impulse-response measurements into the final treatment plan and visual design. Simplified Acoustics executed the specialty interior build-out, including the angled speaker columns, ceiling clouds, fabric system, acoustic treatments, and zoned RGBW lighting, while coordinating with the home’s builder and electrician. Simms also worked closely with Trinnov on system setup and speaker tuning using an Altitude 32 processor and Amplitude 16 amplification, with Buckeye amplifiers powering the main channels. The finished room combines cinema-scale impact with accurate spatial imaging, serviceable construction, and a comfortable visual environment, providing a compelling experience from every seat.
